For nearly twenty years David Dawson was Lucian Freud’s assistant, companion, and model. Freud moved in rarefied, powerful circles and was tenacious about protecting his privacy. He also carefully avoided distraction. With few exceptions, he wanted only those he knew well, like the late Bruce Bernard, to photograph him. David Dawson, however, was in a unique position, and as Freud became comfortable in the presence of Dawson’s camera, photographing became part of the daily ritual of the studio. These photographs reveal in a most intimate way the subjects and the stages of paintings in progress. Few artists, if any, have had their lives and their work recorded over such a length of time.

Despite Freud’s sense of privacy, his circle was wide. Among those who regularly visited Freud were figures from the art world, including art historian John Richardson, and painters David Hockney, and Frank Auerbach, along with model Kate Moss and friends such as the Duke of Beaufort. The book begins in Freud’s old studio in Holland Park and then records the artist in his eighteenth-century house in Kensington, the first floor of which was his final studio. Dawson also photographed Freud on his visits to look at masterpieces in various museums in New York, Amsterdam and Madrid. The book ends with views of the rooms in which Freud’s own extraordinary collection of paintings was hung. It is the only record of the house itself before the dispersal of the art on his death, but ultimately, the photographs create an intimate portrait of the man. The final images in this book are of the hanging of Freud’s work in his posthumous London exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery. Haunting and fascinating, this is a revelatory document about one of our most important and influential painters.

About the Author
David Dawson was born in Wales in 1960. After leaving the Royal College of Art, he combined his work as a painter with becoming an assistant to Lucian Freud; he remained with him until Freud’s death in 2011. His photographs, alongside those of Bruce Bernard, were published in Freud at Work in 2006. Dawson’s paintings have been shown at Pallant House Gallery, Chichester, and by Marlborough Fine Art. His photographs of Lucian Freud have been exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery in 2004, at Hazlitt Holland-Hibbert, London, and at the Sigmund Freud Museum in the former Freud apartment in Vienna in 2013. He divides his time between London, Wales, and New York.

I devoured the first half of this book, flipping pages with intense curiosity and hope. I slowed the second half to savor the rest of the story -- to me, that's a sign of a great book. As Lily's OCD interfered with her education, jobs, friendships, and family relationships, I found myself wishing for her sake that the next page flip would reveal a sudden cure or at least a respite from her routines. I don't mean to sound pitying at all, but rather, I was and am so impressed by her persistent quest to grapple with her OCD and find a way to coexist with her dark thoughts, if not kick the thoughts all together. In reading Lily's story I couldn't help but consider how OCD manifests in people whose families don't have the financial resources Lily's has. Because We Are Bad would be excellent reading for anyone, but especially those trying to walk a closer path to loved ones grappling with chronic psychological and mental health conditions.

Lily’s videos regarding OCD were the first one’s i ever watched trying to come to terms with the diagnosis ocd. When i found out she wrote a book, i knew i had to have it. The similarities in thoughts are what got me. Coming to the realization i’m not alone with thoughts as such as Lily mentioned in her book was huge for me.

As a longtime OCD sufferer I devoured this book in two sittings - although you don't have to have OCD to enjoy Lily's brave, honest, hilarious and heart wrenching writing. I buy a ton of kindle books and most sit around the 70% mark for a good while until I get around to finishing them - not the case here. Its been ages since I laughed at loud at a book, and was also moved to have a tear in the eye.Lily - thank-you for an amazing book and for continuing to educate and shine light on this dreadful disease.

I have sat through way too many terrible presentations that would have greatly benefited from "Make Your Point". If everyone read "Make your Point" I would no longer be exposed to those long winded, rambling, and boring talks that seem to be the norm. "Make Your Point" is both an excellent reference and teaching guide. I think that college students would appreciate the concise approach to public speaking. Business profession will benefit with a refreshing course and the introduction of "The Diamond". "The Diamond" is an approach to clearly and concisely present your ideas wile being confident that your audience is hearing your main points and internalizes the message that you are trying to sned.Final Verdict - I have read many books on effective communication and I can say that "Make Your Point' is at the top of the list. I bought this because I'm at the point in my career where I'm an executive, but still need to dwell in the details a lot. This means I'm frequently "in the weeds" on the analysis side of things, but am also having to succinctly summarize the findings to the highest levels of the organization.Communicating the "high level" summary while including just the key, convincing details can be a tough challenge (for me at least). This book was extremely helpful.I've noticed the change in positive feedback from peers and those above since reading the book and employing the technique.

The most impressive presentation of effective speaking I have ever read. This book is my bible for my toastmasters practice.

The MYP diamond is a great reference tool to help keep things concise. My director taught me a new word: succint! He said he didn't have the time or energy to pick out the important nuggest from my verbose emails. After reading this book and a few others, my communications have greatly increased their effectiveness!

The topic of the book is a great one; the contents however are useless. Had I known the authors were going to simply describe what most people already know about what it takes be a good speaker(have your ideas clear and organized, give examples and provide evidence of what you are talking about, tell people why they should listen to what you have to say, give a mind-blowing conclusion, etc.), I wouldn't have bought the book. I thought the book would contain more useable tips on "how to" be eloquent, as opposed to just describing the characteristics of eloquence. Seems to me that the book was only written as a bait to visit the authors' webpage and pay for other, hopefully more in-depth training courses.Supporting evidence: page 607 (kindle version) talks about how the authors' "real" work includes coaching and videotaping customer service reps to help them appear more friendly and capable (now, that's cool); page 614 says something like "are you the type of person that is boring and frightening? Try smiling; are you the type of person that is friendly but gets no respect? Try giving firm handshakes" (duh!). As an alternative to this book, I recommend Carnegie's "how to win friends and influence people".

I have read many books on the subject of public speaking...and this is by far the best!!!I say this in all honesty. I have taken many courses in public speaking. As my career expanded into sales management I needed to make many presentations and I wished I had this book sooner!!!!It is an easy to read and understand guide to the many aspects of speaking in public. However is goes beyond public speaking. It offers tips and ideas on organizing written proposals etc. etc. etc. I have already used some of the ideas to help secure a large order.The book is very well done and is a great investment for everyone entering into all aspects of sales and business.
