Nicolas Collins, an active composer and performer of electronic music, and has worked with John Cage, Alvin Lucier, David Tudor, and many other masters of modern music. It's like this book was written for me. Fun, simple, incredible experiments and ideas for playing around with home-made electronic sounds. I'd spent a year playing with 555-style oscillators from the Forest Mims playbook to make synthesizers; but Forrest has musical circuits as an afterthought for his more practical electronic projects. I was at a complete standstill, full of ideas, but doing them incorrectly and getting nowhere.This book has exactly what I need to go up a few levels. And while it's at it, tons of really fun ideas for the sound devices themselves. Put loose change in a speaker cone, hook it up to a nine volt battery, dangle some leads and see what you get! Who knew? And Nicolas writes pretty funny as well; I'd never seen a resistor/capacitor setup compared to a Monty Python sketch before.I have one complaint about the book. There's too much cool stuff. I finish a chapter, ready to try everything, and then the next chapter has even better ideas. And then I look at all the chapters remaining and wonder where I'll find the time to do it all. I've got an online order for Jameco for which I'm afraid to hit "send" until I re-read it all again. Meanwhile, I've had a blast doing the projects from the first few chapters.

This book is, apparently, compiled from course materials for what must be a very fun class. It mostly covers two broad topics. First, producing unexpected sounds from radios and the circuit boards in toys, and modifying those devices in simple ways, such as adding photoresistors or new circuit board connections. Second, building simple synthesizers from scratch. The skills taught are basic, and form the building blocks for infinite exploration. The tools and parts needed are all inexpensive (often costing mere pennies). The included CD is great fun, but best saved for later listening, since it contains "spoilers" of what some of the projects might sound like.Because of the book's origination in a class situation, the explanations and pictures are not always ideally clear. There are a lot of typos. However, the writing is so engaging and the book is so much fun that it still deserves 5 stars. Where the book is incomplete ("how to I de-solder something?"), the Web is there.The book is clearly aimed at musicians without any electronics experience. Nonmusicians might still enjoy it, but a joy in playing with sound is absolutely required. I suspect the book would be way too basic for people with any significant experience in electronics.As sidebars, the book includes a considerable amount of history of electronic music -- who's who and what they've been up to.

This is a really fun book, with lots of projects for budding electronic musicians. But it goes beyond that: It's a solid intro to electronics and CMOS components. I went into this book thinking it might be too basic, yet I walked away with a lot of ideas, and some interesting new techniquess.I wish that more electronics writers would cover the material with this author's style and accuracy. Also, kudos for providing parts sources and for using easy to find and inexpensive components. (I've seen many people, myself included, become frustrated by hard-to-find parts lists or the use of discontinued items. These projects suffer from neither of those problems.)In the end, you'll be left wanting to know more about the components and techniques you've picked up. (You'll probably want to add Don Lancaster's classic CMOS Cookbook to your shopping cart. It will give you the details about many of these components.) Highly recommended. I'm looking forward to other books by this author.

I was hoping for a bit more in-depth information on electronics than this book gave. It's a nice "get your feet wet" kind of book, but left me with lots of questions that I think could have been included in the book. The first half of the book wasn't very interesting to me as it talked mostly about circuit bending and hacking already made electronic noise makers.

Seriously, if you are interested in making some extraterrestrial sounds/gadgetsget this book!!! I recommend reading it with Mort Garson playing in the background for ultimate knowledge absorption.

This book is absolutely incredible! So simply articulate to such technical things, and such interesting projects! This is just an all around well written project book. It has updated citations to things like what website to get bulk/cheap parts from and examples (on DVD, as well as other references) from many sonic artists who have tampered in related mad sciences. The different projects are diverse and well prepared.. It's just the greatest thing for a beginning sonic/electronics nerd! Can't say enough about how much I've gotten out of this book.

Steve Bivans is a Viking scholar by training. Be a hero – for yourself, your family, your communityWhen I first looked at this book my thought was “Oh, just another one of those…” I have a right to say that because I’m 71, an old hippy, was an activist for most of my life – been there, done that. I live in a tiny attic apartment, practice simplicity, walk almost everywhere I go, eat organic, recycle, and wouldn’t think of using Round-Up to poison my neighbors’ dogs or children or organic gardens. I thought I knew all about it when I became a recluse thirty years ago from knowing too much about things I couldn’t do anything about and feeling overwhelmed by sheer frustration with the ignorant people in the world who just refuse to accept responsibility for their actions.Then I read this book and felt encouraged for the first time in many years – not for me, but for the continuation of life on this planet. If enough people read it, if enough people actually take action instead of just boring their friends with “hate this” posts about government, environment, food, politics, banking, etc. – then I believe, with author Divans, that you young guys have a chance.To be honest, I did learn something that I suspected was true when my friend in Florida lost his house during the mortgage bubble fiasco, but didn’t have the facts – that “…banks essentially create money out of debt…The banks are banking on the unfortunate fact that most of us don’t have time to pay attention to what they’re doing.”The author nailed me. I had dropped the ball on “know your enemy.” Sadly, you young guys can’t afford to be so casual.But it’s not all doom and gloom. The author’s sustaining theme is “how to live in harmony with yourself, your planet, and your neighbors.” Forget about “saving the world.” Earth/Gaia can toss us fleas off her anytime she chooses! Instead, focus on your own life, how you can experience more joy. For example, consider his tips for building a sanctuary in your backyard (chapter 32).And for those of us who want to “pass gracefully,” as good stewards of Gaia, consider the ideas in chapter 33 – like becoming a tree instead of a space-consuming, health- hazard box full of chemicals.The author is gentle in his recommendations and has wisely cautioned new and old heroes alike to start small and be like Frodo or Aragon: “Try to remember how you felt when you first discovered how messed up our planet is. Maybe that was just a couple sections ago, in this very book. Or maybe you’ve known for a long time but were paralyzed—as many of us have been—by despair that your efforts might have no real consequence or weight, that the problem was just too big for one person to make a difference.”As a former change-agent (one who helps people make changes), I urge new heroes to follow his advice: “Whatever you do, DO NOT try to make too many changes at once! This is the kiss of death for any new lifestyle change. Take one small section of this book, like the food section, for example, and focus on that one for a month or two months, however long it takes to make the changes you want to make. Remember also, that the changes I suggest are only ideas of ways to help curb waste and pollution to the environment while at the same time improving the quality of life for you and your family.”Even though I am not the LOTR fan the author is, I appreciated his references, because I enjoyed the movies and actually read the books.But being familiar with Lord of the Rings, Tolkien, Frodo et.al., is certainly NOT required for reading, understanding, and making changes in your life to “Be part of the solution, not part of the problem” (the mantra that stayed on my blackboards when I taught inner-city kids in the late 60s). Or, if I were teaching in today’s culture hooked on graphic novel heroes, seeking examples of a better life, “Be a hero – for yourself, your family, your community!”

This is a paperback selfie, an excuse for the author to air his own personal rants about just about everything. It is complete with both the paranoia and the general disinformation that is the chronic disease and legitimate heritage of those whose opinion of themselves unfortunately exceeds both their education and their understanding.I'm sorry. I wanted to like this.

This interesting little book does two things. It first uses the metaphor of JRR Tolkien's Lord of the Rings to warn us of the nearly irreparable harm being done daily to our earth. Then, unlike other 'save the earth' efforts, this book goes on to make very clear, sane, and quite individualized suggestions as to how each and every "Hobbit" (meaning you and me) together can have a real and lasting impact, and potentially save this place we inhabit from the impending destruction toward which it is currently headed.It can only help readers to have a cursory familiarity with the setting and characters of LOTR, but it is not required. The author has made his points using those analogies, but his real story and messages are quite clearly presented. Likewise, you needn't be a 'tree-hugger' to find value in this important parable, you only need to have a heart and a mind that cares for our home in order to appreciate the message of this book.

I just skipped all the lengthy excerpts.This is chock full of good information on how to improve your mind, body, and soul. Once you take care of yourself the earth will follow.
