A well-laid out explanation of custom motorcycle design as it exists in today's culture. However, the book is called "The Build," and that may be somewhat misleading for some customers. The book isn't a tutorial book for building a bike. I think it's more of a book to give you guidelines on what to know if you wish to design a bike. It almost assumes you are already a bit mechanically inclined, because they kind of display and talk about many of the parts and tools you'll need in certain builds, but it doesn't go into specifics about maintenance or anything in that nature.I'd say this book is more valuable to designers than mechanics, which is fine because that's what I got it for in the first place. Lots of great reference photos, anatomy explanation on various types of custom motorcycle builds, vocab layout and explanation, et cetera. I like the book.
A well written book - it flows well, and seems to have actually been proof read - it was easy to read. As it is a book on design theory, it does not disappoint with pictures. The pictures actually showed up prey well on my tiny tablet.It isn't just a "picture book" though. I have a potential project that I've been wanting to start, without knowing how to achieve the look I want, or why a certain style might look good. This book has pointed out the key areas and lines that I'll need to focus on, and given me lots of options never considered.Money well spent, but in this age of electronic everything, I'm wanting more than just a Kindle version. I need a hard copy.
This was an inspirational as well as beautifully produced book that gives permission as well as encouragement to create, learn and then create again. It assumes and rightfully so that the aspiring builder has the basic skills to fabricate and the willingness to learn those unique skills that are part of the journey. If you are looking for a cookbook or a "bobber in a box", this is not the book for you. However, if you are pondering the question "I wonder if I could", the honesty of the early beginnings and mistakes of these talented builders may be all you need to take that first cut. It has for me and my buddy.
I am going to perform some cosmetic surgery on my perfectly fine 2015 Triumph Street Triple. I want a cafe racer, but love this bike. So, I will transform it into one. No fab skills at all. No shop (I live in an RV on the Texas coast). But I am inspired to take the plunge. I know that even though my changes are purely cosmetic, there will be a some frustration. I will go back and read this book again...and get over myself. Thank you for the push. Anyone thinking about a project like this should read this book first. Amazing.
Heard about this book from one of Scott Robertson's Gumroad tutorials--highly recommend it for anyone who needs motorcycle reference material. The book itself contains a wealth of knowledge on motorcycle design, and is written in a way that makes it super accessible. I've never rode a motorcycle in my life, but I totally know how they're put together after reading this.
I bought this book last week and haven't been able to put it down. It's made my desire to ride turn into a need to get a bike and make it my own. Rob has compiled the right amount of knowledge to get me caught up on the parts and foundation, but even more he talks about the design behind a Motorcycle. This is not only one I'll read again but one I'll flaunt any chance I get.- Chris
Very readable, will give sound advice on where to start and the thought processes required. It's not a manual to build a specific bike (if you have a very specific build in mind, you should probably just go and buy that bike!), but it will help you to order your thoughts and get your priorities straight. Very inspiring!
I really enjoyed The Build. Gave me a lot of ideas without giving me ideas. If that makes sense. It will when you read it. I highly recommend it. It is geared more toward the cafe style bikes which is fine for me.
